‘Beacon’ is a site specific interactive installation producing abstract collective poetry. A series of
kinetic, wind powered, sound and light sculptures, sited along the four miles of the Greenway which
is connected to an online interface. Participants interact with each beacon directly by recording
sounds into the beacons, indirectly via motion sensors on site and online via a website.
One word messages are relayed between the beacons and the website, which sequences the
recorded messages along the beacons, creating a continually evolving sound and light composition.
As each sound bite is relayed from beacon to beacon, the spinning lanterns emit arcs of light
and send it to the next beacon in the sequence.
The project facilitates an international conversation of ideas between visitors to the Greenway
and online participants around the world. An archive of the recorded sound sequences will be
available on the web site for participants to further explore the creation of new sequences, forming a
dynamic catalogue of the events progress over time.
To be sited along a pedestrian or cycle route accessing the Olympic Park.
Beacon comprises of over 100 sound and light beacons. Individually accessible via the web and on site, they relay one word messages between the site and the web and then sequence them along the run of beacons. As a word is relayed, the spinning lanterns emit an arc of light with the sound bite and send it to the next beacon in the sequence. The beacons connect all nations by facilitating simple and complex conversations, to produce an indefinite, gently flickering composition of light and messages.
The project has been offered full funding and development by Kuala Lumpar University and is now keen to secure a site and involvement of UK Colleges and community.
