DIAF installation Dashanzi 798 District Beijing
Collaboration with sound artist and improviser Yan Jun on a site specific work for the opening of the 798's Dashanzi International Art Festival, Beijing. The installation refers to the district's history as electronics factory for weapon production, by taking live signals from remnants of the original services and ductwork that form the axis into the site. Visitors are affected by sounds reverberating from the internal ducts and out along the site axis. The ducts act like the Sirens of Greek mythology, drawing visitors to the main internal space, the same route the workers would have taken in the factory's hayday. A large mechanical device is to be found at the buildings heart, firing its pulse into the pipes. Zafka later joined the project and the three worked together until the event was unfortunately cancelled following local concerns.
